The Framework

The Framework

Built to Last

a new human learning and growth system

What Is the Built to Last Framework?

The Built to Last framework is essentially a human learning and growth system. Over the past 20 years as a therapist, educator, business owner, and speaker, I started noticing the same patterns over and over again in how humans learn, heal, connect, and grow, regardless of the situation.

At first, I saw these patterns primarily in sex therapy and relationship work. But over time, I realized this exact same process was happening everywhere:

  • in business leadership,

  • in entrepreneurship,

  • in public speaking,

  • in learning new skills,

  • in rebuilding trust after betrayal,

  • in healing anxiety,

  • and even in things like learning how to dance,
fly again after fear, or step onto a stage
    for the first time.

HUMANS ACHIEVE GROWTH PREDICTABLY

Humans tend to move through growth in a very predictable way. First, we feel anxious. Then awkward. Then slowly familiar. Then competent. And eventually, confident. That’s how humans learn. What I began to notice, though, was that some people moved through this process in healthy, sustainable ways; while others stayed stuck, overwhelmed, disregulated, disconnected, or burned out for long periods of time.

The difference often came down to five major areas of human development:

MIND

BELIEFS, LEARNING, AND TESTING IDEAS

OBDsq-Body.png

BODY

NERVOUS SYSTEM SAFETY, RISK TOLERANCE, TAKING ACTION

OBDsq-Heart.png

HEART

TRUST, COMMUNICATION, RELATIONSHIPS

OBDsq-Soul.png

SOUL

IDENTITY, VALUES, OWNERSHIP

OBDsq-Spirit.png

SPIRIT

VISION, LEGACY, SUSTAINABILITY

People who learned how to work with all five areas tended to experience healthier relationships, healthier identities, stronger communication, better emotional regulation, more resilience, and more sustainable long-term growth. The people who struggled most often stayed stuck in one or more areas.

For example:

  • people trapped in harsh or negative thinking patterns often struggle in the Mind space,

  • people who never learned nervous system regulation or emotional safety struggle in the Body space,

  • people who struggle to build trust or communicate effectively needed growth in the Heart space,

  • people who never developed a healthy sense of identity or ownership struggled in the Soul space,

  • and people who lost vision, purpose, meaning, or long-term direction often struggled in the Spirit space.

Over time, I realized this wasn’t just a therapy model. It was a human development model. The Built to Last framework is designed to help people understand how humans grow best: mentally, emotionally, relationally, physically, and purposefully. It’s about helping people:

  • regulate their nervous systems,

  • communicate more honestly,

  • create safer relationships,

  • develop healthier identities,

  • build sustainable lives,

  • and grow in ways that actually last.

Whether we’re talking about relationships, sexuality, leadership, business, burnout, or personal growth, humans are still humans. And when people learn how to heal and grow through the Mind, Body, Heart, Soul, and Spirit together, they often create lives, relationships, and businesses that are truly Built to Last.

Why Does This Framework Apply to BOTH
Relationships and Business?

HUMANS ARE HUMANS

Because humans are still humans, no matter the environment. The same nervous system that handles intimacy also handles leadership, communication, burnout, trust, conflict, vulnerability, risk, and identity. Whether you’re in the bedroom, the boardroom, a business partnership, or a marriage, the core human skills are often the same. You still need emotional regulation. You still need communication. You still need trust. You still need to negotiate needs, handle disappointment, work collaboratively, and create relationships that feel safe and sustainable over time.

In both business and relationships, short-term wins can actually create long-term problems. For example, in business, if you focus only on making a quick sale without building a meaningful relationship, you may make money today, but lose trust, loyalty, and long-term connection tomorrow.

Relationships and sexuality work the same way. If one person constantly prioritizes their own short-term gratification without creating a mutually beneficial experience, resentment eventually builds and connection breaks down. The context may change, but the human dynamics do not.

That’s why the Built to Last framework applies to both relationships and business. At the core, this is a human growth model designed to help people communicate better, regulate their nervous systems, build trust, develop healthier identities, and create sustainable relationships, both personally and professionally.
